If you consider becoming a personal trainer you should get nationally accredited certification in first place. It is not a legal requirement but most gyms expect their personal trainers to be NASM or ACSM certified. A national certification provides a good knowledge base for your future career. Take that with you and try to get as much experience as you can in a local gym or fitness club before you go solo. In this way you will benefit from an advice by your more experienced colleagues as well as all the equipment that you don’t have to buy.
When choosing a right gym for yourself evaluate your immediate as well as far reaching goals. Some gyms may give you the clients while others will require you to find the clients yourself. The latter option would provide you with extra money but put you under more stress. However, if you are going to start your own business learning to sell your service from early days would benefit you most. Ideally you would be able to offer and test your own marketing ideas at your workplace.
Having a perfect resume may not necessarily get you a job; many employers don’t even read it. Two main things they would be interested in is your certification and your experience. The best way of getting an interview is to put yourself in front of your future employer, don’t just send or drop your resume in. For the interview make sure you look presentable and try to demonstrate your best quality or qualities. Another thing your potential employer would expect from you is your availability for the peak time in their gym. Make sure you are available and let them know about it.
In order to become successful at your workplace watch your more experienced colleagues and learn from them. You should always look up to your head trainer and even adopt their philosophy while you work with them. Take their best advice for the future, ask what works best and what does not work. Do that with every trainer you work, however, avoid becoming a copy cat. Your uniqueness after all is what will help you to stand out from the crowd and sell your service in the future.
